Cycl: recycling your organic waste

Cycl: recycling your organic waste

Cycl enables the recycling of organic kitchen waste into the growth of fresh herbs and vegetation. The device integrates an odourless food waste bin within a natural hydroponic system. This uses a Japanese fermentation method known as Bokashi to produce organic fertiliser for the plants.

The user fills the bin with their organic food waste, whilst simultaneously adding the provided Cycl 'Effective Microorganisms'. The anaerobic reaction created generates organic fertiliser that can be drained by the user every few days. When added to the water tank, this fertiliser provides the required nutrients for the hydroponic garden.

Cycl: seedling enclosure & hydroponic garden

Cycl features a seedling enclosure that allows air to circulate whilst retaining heat and moisture, creating the perfect environment for germination. Once germinated, the seeds can be transferred to the hydroponic garden where the growth process is continued, assisted by the liquid fertiliser generated from the food waste bin.

The two Cycl units can be separated for optional storage versatility or tank removal. The tanks can easily be removed from the product so that they can be cleaned and maintained.

Louis Bateman

I am a highly motivated and diligent creative, with an obsession to detail across a variety of disciplines.

The ability to adapt, refine and progress throughout the development process is something that I thrive off.

My work is often focused around the development of human design and interaction, whilst encouraging behaviour change with an eco-conscious mind. Having kick-started my career in the design industry through my placement year at Duku, I now have an extensive skill set and comprehensive understanding of the design development process. I have a keen interest in product styling and particularly enjoy developing minimal, self contained forms that house complex internal mechanisms. A collaborative, strategic and fast paced design environment will be the next step in my career as a product designer.
