Hydroelectric powered chalk stream 'Sonde'
The solution to my own brief regarding the future health of our English chalk streams.
The main body houses the components to test the water and pivots independently to align with the stream's flow. The float allows the water quality data to be transferred to the user via 3G / GPRS / GSM connectivity. The steel anchor sets the device securely into the river bed.

We live in a world of refinement, not invention. With a daily bombardment of commercial advertising driving a throw-away, perfectionist society, consumerism truly has, gone crazy. I believe as designers, we must take a step back from fuelling this never ending hunger for new products, and direct our skills towards a more circular economy, free of gimmicks, that truly benefits our society and the environment.
More than 75% of England's chalk streams are in poor health. Too many are affected by agricultural runoff, mismanaged sewer systems, and industrial activities. In order to tackle this problem, we must first have an accessible means of gathering reliable and accurate data from chalk streams all around the country - without this widespread data it is impossible to know how we can protect these water sources from future harm.
