Final year project
Personalising sustainable paint production for the eco-conscious artist [Read more]
Form
Inspired by a blend of Victorian appliance styling and steampunk design, the product’s form displays its functionality. The product encourages natural paint creation using oil and raw pigment, only dispensing as much as the user needs.
Detail
The central unit calculates and decants the individual pigments to create the target colour chosen by the user. Additional workstations process this pigment into paint using traditional mixing methods.
Interface
The use of an interchangeable interface allows the user to select, save, and pay for colours and quantities using contactless and Bluetooth technology.
Prototype
A prototype has been developed to demonstrate the capabilities of the design.
Create
Paint made and removed from the device can be used straight away on personal projects or stored for a long period of time owing to its durable quality.
Extra
An additional project showcases a fully functioning coffee machine, housing the AeroPress. This involves the design, fabrication, and testing of embedded and mechanical systems.
Corín McCarthy
I was that child who always asked questions, and now I am that adult who always asks questions.
My design process tends to follow the path of working inside out, figuring out the functional aspects in fine detail before following with a suitable form. Anything worth doing is going to be challenging and involves taking risks, as my final major project demonstrates. Analytic research into artistic painting highlighted issues of paint toxicity and waste. Utilising my skills in design research methods, rapid ideation, and critical analysis led to the creation of a viable user-centred solution to these challenges. I thrive in entrepreneurial environments and work cohesively in multi-disciplinary teams and would like to pursue my interest in collaborative creation within a like-minded team.

Experience
I am an experienced gymnastics coach, and I have been coaching children and adults of varying abilities over the past 5 years. In 2018 I used these skills to coordinate and manage the MyLifestyle Programme at Loughborough University, encouraging and introducing new skills to the class, while improving their confidence and ability.
In 2017 I was nominated for the role of Social Secretary of the Loughborough Gymnastics team committee. This involved organising competitions and social events, designing leotards and t-shirts, and ensuring integration of new members.
