Ergonomics (Human Factors Design)

Ella Bishop

Prosthetic limbs are artificial replacements for a body part and are worn by approximately 45,000 people in the UK alone. One common problem is that wearing a prosthesis can cause skin breakdown, this is due to a combination of heat, pressure and moisture. The aim of this research project is to understand both the physiological reactions of the skin, the psychological reactions of the user and how these change over time.

My time at Loughborough University has provided me with opportunities both on an academic and personal level. Opportunities such as being a course representative, doing an industrial placement and taking part in various sporting activities have allowed me to gain skills and qualities, that I use not only for work but in my daily life. I have learnt how Ergonomics is relevant across many different sectors and put into practice some of the tools and methods used in industry, all the while, improving both my technical and soft skills.

Final year project

Simulating the use of a prosthesis to investigate the effects of time and moisture on the interaction between skin and silicone
