Hao Jun (Jonathan) Yim

I am a driven, technically minded and forward-thinking designer who loves to solve problems with aesthetically pleasing and aptly functional solutions.

The idea of my project arose from observations of my peers’ spending habits. While cashless payment provides unparalleled convenience, it also makes us less salient to our expenditure and thus more prone to overspending. My product aims to provide the convenience of cashless payment, while also providing users with a clear and unambiguous way to be more aware of their spending.

I have a hands-on approach to design and am specialised in sketching, rapid prototyping and CAD modelling. I am keen to pursue my development by working on projects across different categories, where I can strive to challenge conventions and conceive innovative ideas that satisfy the needs of users and manufacturers. In particular, I hope to have the opportunity to apply new and emerging technologies in real-world settings.

Increasing awareness of cashless spending through tactile and visual feedback

Awards

'20 Diploma in Professional Studies
I was shortlisted for the Starpack Student Awards in 2017. I created sustainable food packaging using carton board, designed to be delivered within cities to office workers. The project focused on creating a simple to use and innovative packaging solution that satisfies the needs of both consumers and delivery workers.

Experience

During my placement year at Porsche Design GmbH (Studio F·A·Porsche), I worked on over 20 projects, designing products in different categories from initial ideation to its realisation; several of which are already on the market. I was given the chance to fully participate in the team and engage in the whole design process, including being responsible for client communications and presentations. My time at Porsche Design helped me to understand and appreciate the nuances in design when going through the iterative design process. I also learnt how to work collaboratively in a corporate environment with people from different disciplines and cultures.
